Swiss Steak
My Mom can make a great Swiss Steak so this recipe interested me, and it is a slow cooker recipe which is a bonus, let the appliance do the work for you. I made this on 22 Jan 2017 and it is good! I modified the recipe slightly with my findings. Link to the shortcut is listed in the Recipe Notes section.
Ingredients
- 1 kilo beef round steak, OR any beef just cut into large chunks
- 1 onion, sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, sliced into strips
- 2 1/2 cups tomato sauce, OR make from a shortcut
- 1 can whole peeled tomatoes, chopped and drained but retain juice
- salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Tenderize the steak with either a mallet type tenderizer or a needle tenderizer. Season the steak pieces with salt and pepper on both sides, arrange the pieces in your slow cooker. If using local sourced beef where you just get large chunks, slice into 3/4 inch to 1 inch steaks first.
- Place the onion and bell pepper on top of the meat, pour the tomato sauce and chopped tomatoes over the onions and bell pepper. Cover and cook on Low setting for 8 hours.
- At 8 hours on Low the beef should be fork tender, serve with mashed potatoes or egg noodles.
Notes
Local beef, not beef from Tesco will run between 150 to 260 Baht/kilo. Using the highest figure, for 4 servings, this is about $1.43 per serving.

Viennese Beef Goulash
This, sounds really good! Austrian Goulash is different than Hungarian style but still shares the paprika ingredient and is served over pasta or potatoes. This recipe screams of using a slow cooker for the simmering, which is what I will do when I make this so I will modify this recipe slighly. One ingredient may only be available in the larger cities, cornichons.
Ingredients
- 10 tablespoons olive oil
- 5 1/2 cups onion, diced
- 1/2 cup garlic, smashed and minced, about 1/2 head of garlic
- 1 kilo beef stew meat, cut into 1 to 1 1/2 inch pieces
- 1/2 cup cornichons, finely chopped
- 1/2 lemon, zest only
- 1 teaspoon caraway seeds
- 4 tablespoons paprika
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar, OR equal 2 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar, OR 1 1/2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar
- 2 1/2 cups beef stock, fresh or make from powder
- 2 bay leaves
- salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Heat 5 tablespoons of olive oil in a medium pot and cook onion and garlic on medium heat until golden brown, stirring occasionally to ensure garlic does not burn. After it is cooked, place in your slow cooker.
- Add the remaining olive oil to the same pot and brown the beef well in batches, as it browns, add to the slow cooker. Once all the beef is added to the slow cooker, add the rest of the ingredients to the slow cooker. Mix well and cook on High setting for 3 hours. Check for tenderness of the beef at the 3 hour mark, continue cooking if not tender. If mixture is too thick, add a bit of beef stock and stir that in.
- Season with additional salt and pepper to suit your taste. Remove the bay leaves before serving. Serve over pasta or mashed potatoes.
Notes
For the beef, I will go with 200 Baht/kilo. For 6 servings this is about 98 cents per serving.

Cube Steaks with Gravy
A typical cube steak comes from the top round or top sirlion beef cuts and is normally mechanically tenderized which leave indentations in the meat in a process called cubing. Since I live in a out of the way place, there is two options for me for beef, buy online from a butcher and pay top dollar or I can buy local beef right here in the village. I bought a piercing meat tenderizer and since this is a slow cooker recipe, I am going to use any cut of beef I can get and will cut about 3/4 inch thick and use that. Link to the shortcut is listed in the Recipe Notes section.
Ingredients
- 1/3 cup all purpose flour
- 6 beef cube steaks, go with 6 120-150 gram cuts of beef and tenderize yourself
- 1 large onion, sliced and seperated into rings
- 2 cups beef stock, fresh or from powder
- 3 packets brown gravy, OR make from a shortcut on this site
- 1 cup water
- salt and pepper, to taste
- olive oil, as needed
- garlic powder, as needed
- 1-2 handfuls fresh mushrooms, your preference
Instructions
- Season the flour with garlic powder, salt, and pepper to your liking. You can use either a bag to shake the steaks in the flour or just a plate to coat the steaks with flour.
- Heat a skillet with a splash of olive oil and cook the steaks until lightly browned, you are not cooking them through, just lightly browning them and as you cook them, place them in the slow cooker. Once all the steaks are browned and in the slow cooker, top with the onions then pour in the beef stock. Cook on Low setting for 8 hours or until beef is tender. If your slow cooker runs a bit on the warm side, check on the beef at about 6-7 hours.
- When the beef is tender, in a skillet with a splash of live oil, cook the mushrooms then add to the slow cooker. Whisk together the gravy packets and water (I cannot stress enough to make this shortcut, so easy!), and add to the slow cooker, cook for another 30 minutes. Remove the steaks to plates, stir up the gravy and ladle over steaks, mashed potatoes or pasta.
Notes
Beef would run about 200-250 Baht/kilo. You would need just under a kilo, for this I will estimate 200 Baht. For 6 servings, this is just under $1 per serving.
Shortcut: Gravy Mix.
Variant: add fresh chopped bell pepper.

Slow Cooker Pepper Steak
Sounds really good. This would be great on pasta, rice, mashed potatoes, or even on a bun with a slice of Swiss cheese. On my to cook list.
Ingredients
- 1 kilo lean beef, cut into 2 inch strips
- 4 cloves garlic, smashed and minced
- 1 red bell pepper, large, sliced into strips
- 1 green bell pepper, large, sliced into strips
- 1/2 onion, chopped
- 1 can whole peeled tomatoes, chopped, plus the juice
- 3 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar
- 1 tablespoon beef stock powder
- 1/4 cup hot water
- 1 tablespoon corn starch, and a bit more as needed at the end
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- olive oil, as needed
- black pepper, to taste
Instructions
- In a large non stick pan, heat a splash of olive oil then brown the strips of beef, no need to cook them through, just quickly brown them and then add to the slow cooker. Add the minced garlic to the slow cooker and mix into the beef strips.
- Mix the stock powder with the hot water, when mixed, add the corn starch and mix. Pour this into the slow cooker along with the black pepper, soy sauce, chopped tomatoes and juice, sugar, and onion. Slice the bell peppers and refrigerate. Set the slow cooker to Low setting for 6-8 hours or High setting for 3-4 hours. For low setting, at the 4 hour mark, add the sliced bell pepper and mix in. For high setting, at the 2 hour mark, add the sliced bell pepper and mix in, continue cooking. This keeps the bell pepper crunchy and not turning to mush.
- When the beef is tender and cooked through, mix 1 tablespoon of corn starch with just enough water to make a paste, then stir that into the pot and cook for another 10 or 15 minutes, this will thicken the sauce to a gravy like consistency. Serve over rice, pasta, mashed potatoes, or in a bun with a slice of Swiss cheese.
Notes
The beef would run about 200 Baht/kilo. For 6 servings, this comes out to about 98 cents per serving. Excellent cost.

Irish Bacon, Sausage, Onion & Potato Dish
Not sure if this is Irish but it sounds good and hearty. For this you will need a large oven proof pot with a lid or foil to cover. To make this in a slow cooker, cut the ingredients in half and cook on High setting for 4 hours.
Ingredients
- 2 kilo potatoes, washed and cut into large pieces
- 2 onions, peeled and thickly sliced
- 500 grams sausage, spicy smoked sausage, bangers, or brats would work
- 500 grams bacon
- 2 1/8 cups water
- 1 tablespoon beef stock powder
- 3-4 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
- salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Use hot water from your hot water pot and dissolve the beef powder in a sauce pan.
- Grill or broil the sausage and bacon to color them, do not over cook or dry them out, drain on paper towels. When drained, cut the bacon into 1 inch pieces, cut the sausage into large pieces.
- Preheat your oven to 150 C. Using large oven proof pot, layer the ingredients in this order: onion, bacon, sausage, potatoes. Season each layer with pepper and parsley. Repeat until all the ingredients are used.
- Heat the water with beef stock in it to boil, then pour this into the large pot and cover with a lid or foil. Place the pot in the oven and cook for at least 3 hours (4 to 5 hours does not hurt either). At the 2 hour point, check the liquid level in the point, you want about an inch of liquid in the bottom of the pot at all times. Serve, liquid at the bottom is your gravy.
Notes
The sausage, spicy smoked sausage runs about 125 Baht/500 grams, English Bangers, pork or beef will run about 100 Baht/500 grams. Brats will run about 180 Baht/500 grams. Bacon will cost about 200 to 280 Baht/500 grams. Using Bangers, this comes out to about $1.88 per serving for 6 servings. Over all, not a bad cost for a hearty meal.
To cook this in a slow cooker, cut the ingredients in half and cook on High setting for 4 hours.

Slow Cooker Pot Roast
Sounds good but I have modified this before even making it based on some basic cooking skills. Sounds good and I will try this. Link to the shortcut is listed in the Recipe Notes section.
Ingredients
Pot Roast
- 1 1/2 kilos boneless chuck roast, OR any cut of beef for people out in villages
- olive oil
- 500 grams carrots, no need to peel, just wash and cut into large pieces
- 1 kilo potatoes, no need to peel, just wash and cut into large pieces
- 1 onion, peeled and cut into large pieces
- 1-2 stalks celery, import type, cut into large pieces, optional
- 1 cup beef stock, fresh or from powder
- 1 tablespoon corn starch, to make the gravy with
Seasoning Mix
- 2 tablespoons steak seasoning, OR make from a shortcut
- 1 tablespoon kosher salt, OR 1/2 teaspoon table salt
- 1 tablespoon dried thyme
- 1 tablespoon dried rosemary
Instructions
- Combine the Seasoning mix in a bowl and set aside.
- Coat both sides of meat with olive oil. Sprinkle on a third of the seasoning mix onto each side. Sear both sides of the meat in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Transfer roast to slow cooker.
- Place the vegetables in a large bowl. Drizzle on a little olive oil to coat vegetables. Sprinkle on the remaining seasoning mix. Pour these over the roast. Pour the beef stock in.
- Cover and cook on Low setting for 9 hours or High setting for 5-6 hours.
- Spoon out most of the cooking juices from the slow cooker, either remove the roast or use a baster. Transfer juices to a small sauce pan and bring to a simmer over medium heat on the stove. Whisk together the cornstarch with a little water. Blend into the pan juices while whisking continuously. Bring back to a simmer until thickened. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
- Place the roast on a serving dish, spoon on the vegetables, ladle the gravy over, serve. Just that easy.
Notes
Beef can run 250 Baht/kilo. Everything else is low cost. For 4 servings this is about $2.75 per serving, and for 6 servings, about $1.85 per serving. Not a cheap meal but a great meal for visiting friends or family and great as a once a month meal. You may very well get fresh beef in a village for as low as 150 Baht/kilo, which I have seen, and I buy right then and make a roast.

BBQ Beans & Weenies
This is an old classic from years ago. Inexpensive for a side dish, lunch or even a main dish. Use quality hot dogs or spicy smoked sausage. This is true comfort food right here. You have to prep the day before, then start early morning the next day. I do like the fact that this uses red kidney beans instead of Pinto or Great Northern beans. I made this on 15 Dec 2016, very good! Followed the recipe as stated. Link to the Shortcut is listed in the Notes section.
Ingredients
- 500 grams dry red kidney beans, (1 lb)
- 4 cups BBQ sauce, Shortcut
- 300-500 grams quality hot dogs, beef, chicken, or smoked sausage, (¾-1 lb)
Instructions
- The evening before, sort and rinse the beans (sorting meanings taking out bad beans or debris in the beans) then place in a container that will fit in your fridge, add water to cover by 2 inches, cover and refrigerate over night.
- Next morning, drain and rinse the beans and place in a large pot for the stove top, add water to cover by 2 inches, bring to a boil for 15 minutes, remove from heat, drain, rinse, and pour into the slow cooker, add enough water to cover by 2 inches (they will swell during this). IMPORTANT NOTE: kidney beans do have a toxin that needs to be removed by boiling first, a slow cooker will not come up to the temp needed to remove this toxin.
- Cook on Low setting for 7-10 hours or High setting for 3-5 hours. The beans are cooked when you can mush them by simply pushing against the roof of your mouth with your tongue. Last thing you want is a crunchy bean, that is not good.
- When the beans are done, drain the water from the slow cooker pot (carefully!). Rinse the beans and return them to the pot, add BBQ sauce of your choice and the hot dogs or sausage. I would cut the hot dogs to about ¾ inch pieces, for the sausage, since it is a larger diameter, I would slice into ¼ to ½ inch pieces. Give this a quick stir and place on Low setting for 4 hours or high for 2 or 3 hours, at this point you are just heating everything through. Serve as a side dish, lunch (the day after, always better the next day), or for a filling main course with a salad on the side.
- Serve and enjoy.
Notes
The sausage will run about 250 Baht/500 grams, this recipe screams of a lot of sausage so go with that. For 8 servings, this is about 92 cents per serving. If using quality beef hot dogs or even chicken hot dogs, the cost is less.
Shortcut: BBQ Sauce.
