US Beer Reviews

Since I am in the US since Jun 2019 and due to return in 2021, I figured I would do some beer reviews. I have a cookbook given to me by my Mom, Cooking With Beer, that inspired me to try some new beers and get away from my trusted favorite US beers, first being MGD followed by Bud Light.

I am not by any means a connoisseur of beer, this is just my writing on how I liked various beers. As I try each one, I will take a photo of the packaging/bottle, and will write my review.

As I use beer in recipes, I will list the recipe(s) under the beer used. Beers are listed alphabetically.

---- CRAFT BEERS ----

Blue Moon - Belgian White

5 ⭐ out of 10.

A Belgian-style wheat ale, 5.4% alcohol, brewed with wheat, steel cut oats, Valencia orange peel, and coriander. The orange and coriander is a nice mix, and even though I am not a fan of fruity beers, this is quite good ale! Very smooth, light orange flavor, more of a coriander taste. Very refreshing. I can get used to this, this may be an ale I buy often for a nice change of pace. Overall, excellent ale. Blue Moon Brewing Company is located in Denver, CO but is owned by Molson Coors Beverage Company.

Blackstone - Nut Brown Ale

10 🌟 out of 10.

This is an excellent English style brown ale, excellent flavor, slightly nutty and toasty, and comes in a 5.6% alcohol. This ale is brewed by Blackstone Brewing Company, Nashville, TN. This could certainly become a weekly beer for me.

Breckenridge - Vanilla Porter

11 🌟 out of 10.

I was in the store and this caught my attention with the word vanilla, sounded interesting so I bought a 6 pack. I very much enjoyed this is an excellent beer!. A few of the ingredients in this beer is roasted hops and Madagascar vanilla beans. The touch of vanilla is perfect. This is hands down, the best craft beer I have tasted so far. Very smooth tasting beer.

Goose Island - IPA

6 ⭐ out of 10.

Although heavy on the grapefruit and pine flavors, this is quite a good pale ale that comes in at 5.9% alcohol. This has a stronger pine accent than Sierra Nevada pale ale but no aftertaste. This is a good ale that I will enjoy from time to time as a break from commercial beers. This pale ale is brewed by Goose Island Beer Company, in operation since 1995 in Chicago, IL.

}==== Lagunitas - IPA ====

**5 ⭐ out of 10**.

This is an excellent IPA, and it is smooth. This pale ale is made with 43 types of hops and 65 various malts. This pale ale comes in at 6.2% alcohol. This could be a weekly beer for me. Lagunitas has breweries in California and Illinois.

New Belgium - Fat Tire Amber Ale

8 ⭐ out of 10.

I enjoyed a six pack of this ale, and it is good! Not a fruity ale, very smooth, no aftertaste, overall full bodied taste. This could be a monthly beer purchase to enjoy on occasion with family. Alcohol level is 5.2%. This ale is brewed in Colorado by New Belgium Brewing Company.

Shiner - Shiner Bock

10 🌟 out of 10.

I had heard about bock for years, never had it until I enjoyed a 6 pack of Shiner Bock in Aug 2020, and wow, it is good! A main ingredient in this bock is roasted barley and that lends to the dark color. The alcohol is a mild 4.4%. The flavor is exceptional, this could easily become a regular while I am here. Very smooth, no bitterness, excellent flavor, this is a great tasting and refreshing ale. This bock has been brewed since 1909 at the Spoetzl Brewery in Shiner, TX.

Shock Top - Belgian White

10 🌟 out of 10.

I was skeptical about this beer when I bought it just based on the logo, but read that it was a Belgian White and is a wheat beer and decided to give it a taste. WOW, it is good! The taste is excellent, a combination of orange, lemon, and lime peels that is not overpowering but refreshing. This is an unfiltered beer that is cloudy by its nature, and is a 5.2% alcohol beer. Shock Tops Beers are brewed in Fort Collins, CO and is owned by Anheuser-Busch Company.

Sierra Nevada - Pale Ale

5 ⭐ out of 10.

This craft ale is heavy on the hops and grapefruit peel with a touch of pine, 5.6% alcohol. I needed a pale ale for a cornbread recipe, so I bought this and, as being the first pale ale I have tried, this is really good! For the recipe the taste from the ale is very mild, so I changed the recipe to any beer or even water. But the flavor of the ale while just enjoying one is quite good. This will be enjoyed once in a while just to change up what I commonly drink. Overall, excellent ale. Brewery located in Chico, CA.

}
}==== Yazoo - Gerst Amber Ale ====

**10 🌟 out of 10**.

Brewed with German hops and a hint of corn, and comes in at 4.9% alcohol. This is an extremely good beer and is what **I would classify this as what beer should taste like!** Excellent flavor, very smooth, this will be a regular. Brewery located in Nashville, TN.

==== ---- IMPORTED BEERS ---- ====

Belgium - Hoegaarden White

11 🌟 out of 10.

This is a wheat or white/blonde beer, and is cloudy by the nature of how it is brewed (fermented twice but not filtered). This beer was first brewed in 1445, that shows it is good! This beer was the first to be brewed that had orange peel and coriander in the ingredients. This beer is 4.9% alcohol. This is excellent beer! Excellent flavor, no aftertaste, smooth and refreshing.

Germany - Spaten Premium Lager

10 🌟 out of 10.

I seen this in the store and decided to try it as it was imported, and from Germany. And I can honestly say, this is excellent lager with no bitter aftertaste. This lager is 5.2% alcohol. Spaten is brewed by Spaten-Franziskaner-Bräu GmbH in Munich, Germany and is owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev Company.

9 ⭐ out of 10.

Italy - Peroni Nastro Azzurro

This is a pale lager and Nastro Azzurro translates to blue ribbon. I bought this beer out of curiosity since it was from Italy. This is a very good tasting beer yet very mild, and no aftertaste. I thought is was too mild tasting, so 9 out of 10 stars for this. This lager is 5.1% alcohol and is brewed in Rome, Italy by Peroni Brewery. The brewery is owned by Asahi Breweries in Sumida, Japan.

---- COMMERCIAL BEERS ----

Bud Light

8 ⭐ out of 10.

I did not drink any beer for my first year back in the US, really, I stopped due to the cost. Now that I am going to be here a bit longer than planned (due to COVID-19), I settled on an old favorite, Bud Light. This is a nice lager, 5% alcohol and I am rather amazed at their ingredients, which are boldly listed on the box, Hops, Barley, Water, and Rice. This is also the number one selling beer in the world. Brewery located in St. Louis, MO. After drinking some craft beer then switching to Bud Light, the first few drinks, Bud Light tastes like water.“

George Killian's Irish Red

10 🌟 out of 10.

Excellent beer! This beer is ruby red/amber in color, and has a slight roasted caramel malt flavor as well as a light touch of citrus. This was originally brewed in 1864 in Enniscorthy, Ireland and has been brewed in the US since 1981. This beer has 4.98% alcohol. Owned by Molson Coors Beverage Company.

Miller Genuine Draft

9 ⭐ out of 10.

This was my beer of choice when I was a Chief in the Navy. This is a lager with 4.6% alcohol and it is smooth and good flavored. A personal favorite, but Bud Light is just more common to find. Owned by Molson Coors Beverage Company.
